Spiritual Direction Meeting - 4/8/2011

Today was a tearful meeting for me with Lynn. I've got to write this question down somewhere since it was given to me last night and I don't want it to escape me:

"Is pride preventing you from feasting at the table of grace?"

In my meeting I shared with Lynn all the "stuff" I have been going to and acknowledge that I am broken, hurting and in need all so many different levels. From being a husband/father, to worker, friend and Follower of Jesus. I communicated to Lynn that I feel like I have fallen short in all of these areas and have been failing to "be what I need to be" for all the people whom I love and care for in my life, particularly Tracey and Jordi. Tracey and I had one of our largest arguments since being married on Sunday, April 3rd. Basically it was a culmination of all the personal struggles I have listed above. In my meeting with Pete on Wednesday night he said it sound as if I'm letting the worries of my life weaken my guard, which is allowing the evil one to manipulate my weakness of receiving grace.

Lynn asked where these "expectations" are coming from. It is then that I realized that I'm creating them for myself-- which comes from the "compare" game that I play with other fathers/families in our lives. I try to measure what I believe is a "good and successful" man to the others I see. With that, I have myself believing that I am weak, ill-prepared, not able to provide and a poor spiritual leader. Lynn followed up by asking, "Do Tracey and Jordan tell this to you?"-- for which the answer is "no". If anything they are loving, caring and understanding, but it is a challenge for me to receive their GRACE. Which is an issue I am struggling with in my relationship with Christ. Basically, this struggle in transferring to my earthly relationships.

Lynn then asked me to describe God the Father. The first thing that came to mind was "UNCONDITIONAL LOVE". She then asked, "How does He want me to be like?". I responded, "Like a CHILD." She replied to me, "That's an interesting response. Do you think He's telling you to something?". The obvious answer is "Yes." He wants me to receive His UNCONDITIONAL LOVE like a CHILD, in His freely-given GRACE. So much more to write-- I'll have to continue in on another entry.

Mt 5:3 - "Blessed are the poor in spirit...

"Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven."

I read this this morning and felt the prompting to dwell on this statement. Given what has been going on from in all areas of life right now it is easy to feel as if there is a major trembling in my life. Things like job security, finances, new family circumstances, care for Jordi, Jordi's future, mine and Moo's future, and so much more. I am overwhelmed-- and I only know to go to Him-- my Father in heaven. I am so in need of His strength and courage because of all of these things. I have not felt this unstable or insecure for many years, but my life experience tells me that God wants me to rely more heavily upon Him. It is difficult when the environment around me shows that things are going to get worse but I'm trying to live out Ro 5:3:

"...And we rejoice in the hope of the Glory of God. Not only so, we rejoice in our sufferings..."

How am I to make all of this work? It's simple. I'm not.

Lord, I pray for Your strength and courage-- and Your Holy Spirit to fall upon me. Direct my paths in a way that I can be a good steward of what you have blessed me with and have allowed me to care for. Give me Your wisdom and guidance to make the right decisions with clarity. I pray the same for Moo for her new position.

I thank you that you would even listen to my cries and pleadings.

Your servant, Robert

Spiritual Direction Meeting - 2/4/2011

In my spiritual direction meeting with Lynn today I was asked, "What has been going on?". A few things came to mind from our previous meeting on 1/11/2011 that I was really struggling with-- particularly with the challenges/prayers that had been placed before me, which were "...that I would know of His love for me that I would know how to love others has Him," and to "...have the 'tough' conversations with Brett."

It was peaceful in know that the first sense or word that came to me was "celebration" when it came to describing my current disposition in these areas. I don't claim to have overcome these things by any means, but I feel as if I'm beginning to grasp what it is Lynn is advising and what the Lord is doing in my heart and life. Lynn referred to it as me "practicing" what the Lord was revealing to me. The Lord is showing me that my desire to earn His favor (and others' favor) was not the proper heart-set to be in. 6-9 months ago, I would find my identity in working/earning His and others' favor. It was a way I would determine my worth in Him and to other people. The word "appeasement" came to mind which has such a negative connotation to it. I discovered that I'm in a season where I am practicing receiving His grace and His peace. In this, I'm practicing a new strategy that is based on the Lord rather than applying my old one based on my understanding of worth and approval.

In this it has become a battle within my heart that pits Unconditional Love versus Earning-- or, Approval versus Grace in God, family, and friends. This process is forming me to be more like Him and has me in a season of reconnection, renewal, restoration, reconciliation and recalibration with those around me, but more importantly with God, Tracey, Brett and Jordan. I'm seeing things in a new light, new paradigm with less distortions.

God has me sensing-- as He did back in late August that, "I (He) got this." It's a good place to be. The verse that came to Lynn's mind was Matthew 11:28-30 that says:

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

The questions I need to continue ask myself are:
  1. What does grace mean?
  2. What does not having the "title" at ROCKHARBOR mean?
The second was a minor issue I brought up, but Lynn referred me once again to the favor/earning issue above and reminded me of GRACE. For some strange reason I came to the ROCKHARBOR Staff page and they had Community Pastors listed. It was odd not seeing mine and Tracey's names not there. Six months ago, I might have reacted differently, but I was reminded of the purpose of the Sabbatical (or break from ministry) Tracey and I took that started in June of 2009. Since then, we have rebuilt our relationship with family (Mom, Spring, Dad, Brett), friends (too many to name), but most importantly our marriage (and family with Brett & Jordan).

Thank You, my Father in heaven. Please help me set my heart and mind on the things that have your fingerprints on. Let me find my way to You and Your way. It is you I love and for you I live. Let me reflect you in all that I do.

Love,

Your son, Ye-- of little faith.

Spiritual Direction Meeting - 1/13/2011

Feel like I am not worthy to receive God's appropriate grace.
  • Fear of failing Brett, Tracey, Jordi
  • Feel the need to make up for lost time with Brett
  • May need to consider one-on-one counseling with Brett further down the line.
Need to set boundaries for time with family members-- Brett particularly, because of burden of trying to make up for lost time is superceding care of self (need of sleep/rest, taking care of bills, etc.).
  • Results in physical and emotional ability to effectively care for everyone in my family.
PRAYER FOR THIS TIME:
  • That I would have the courage to have the "tough" conversations with Brett (fear of failure, fear of letting him down, burden of lost time).
  • That I may be schooled in His love, and from it that I would be able to love.
Lord, you know I cannot do this without You. Please send your Holy Spirit into the chambers of my heart that it may overflow to the mind, body and spirit. You have blessed me with a loving wife, boy in need of familial love and a beautiful little girl full of joy. I just want to be a good steward of what You have placed before me. Let me overcome the accusations of the evil one who tells me, "You failed," "You're not good enough," and "You've let people down." It our weakness, You are strong. I love, You, Lord.

In Memory of Bill Kimbell

On Sunday, April 27th, 2008, a handful of fellow surfers partook in a memorial paddle out for Bill Kimbell who went to be with the Lord on March 9th, 2008. Below are photos that Trisha Regehr took of the beautiful day.

Bill, you will be missed brother, but instead of "Goodbye" I will say, "Until we meet again."

Nicaragua 2007

Hi all,

Me and one of my best mates, Simon (and a few other guys) headed down to Nicaragua August 24th - September 2nd. It reminded me a lot of Costa Rica but it was definitely different. Inside the Popoyo Surf Lodge, the Nicaraguans were friendly-- however in Managua (near the airport) and in the surrounding areas around the lodge it seemed as if the people were not as friendly as their Tico neighbors to the south. With all that said, we surfed Playgrounds (PGs), "The Beachbreak", Popoyo (Inside), and Lance's Left. When it rained (which was about 30% of the time) it REALLY RAINED! No little rain drops there that's for sure.

The offshore winds for the most part were hard to catch and even our boatman said it was an odd season for the winds and weather. It's not to take away that we still had some fun waves-- the best day being the last day of our trip when we caught the legendary offshore winds at "The Beachbreak" with 5-8 foot swell. Everyone else had quit surfing out of frustration but Simon and I stuck it out and scored. Of course our photographer wanted to surf instead of taking shots of us. I couldn't blame him because it was GOOD that last day! I'm sure I have more to say but I'd rather just post my pix!

A Great, Great Story...

At a TD Club meeting many years before his death, Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant told the following story, which was typical of the way he operated.

I had just been named the new head coach at Alabama and was off in my old car down in South Alabama recruiting a prospect who was supposed to have een a pretty good player and I was 'havin' trouble finding the place. Getting hungry I spied an old cinder block building with a small sign out front that simply said "Restaurant."

I pull up, go in and every head in the place turns to stare at me. Seems I'm the only white 'fella' in the place. But the food smelled good.

So I skip a table and go up to a cement bar and sit. A big ole man in a tee shirt and cap comes over and says, "What do you need?" I told him I needed lunch and what did they have today?

He says, "You probably won't like it here, today we're having chitlins, collared greens and black eyed peas with cornbread. I'll bet you don't even know what chitlins are, do you?"

I looked him square in the eye and said, "I'm from Arkansas , I've probably eaten a mile of them. Sounds like I'm in the right place." They all smiled as he left to serve me up a big plate.

When he comes back he says, "You ain't from around here then?"

And I explain I'm the new football coach up in Tuscaloosa at the University and I'm here to find whatever that boy's name was and he says, yeah I've heard of him, he's suppose d to be pretty good. And he gives me directions to the school so I can meet him and his coach. As I'm paying up to leave, I remember my manners and leave a tip, not too big to be flashy, but a good one and he told me lunch was on him, but I told him for a lunch that good, I felt I should pay.

The big man asked me if I had a photograph or something he could hang up to show I'd been there. I was so new that I didn't have any yet. It really wasn't that big a thing back then to be asked for, but I took a napkin and wrote his name and address on it and told him I'd get him one.

I met the kid I was 'lookin' for later that afternoon and I don't remember his name, but do remember I didn't think much of him when I met him. I had wasted a day, or so I thought.

When I got back to Tuscaloosa late that night, I took that napkin from my shirt pocket and put it under my keys so I wouldn't forget it. Heck, back then I was excited that anybody would want a picture of me. And the next day we found a picture and I wrote on it, "Thanks for the best lunch I've ever had. Paul Bear Bryant."

Now let's go a whole 'buncha' years down the road. Now we have black players at Alabama and I'm back down in that part of the country scouting an offensive lineman we sure needed. Well, he's got two friends going to Auburn and he tells me he's got his heart set on Auburn too, so I leave empty handed and go on to see some others while I'm down there.

Two days later, I'm in my office in Tuscaloosa and the phone rings and it's this kid who just turned me down, and he says, "Coach, do you still want me at Alabama?" And I said, "Yes I sure do." And he says okay, he'll come. And I say, "Well son, what changed your mind?" And he said, "When my grandpa found out that I had a chance to play for you and said no, he pitched a fit and told me I wasn't going nowhere but Alabama , and wasn't playing for nobody but you. He thinks a lot of you and has ever since y'all met."

Well, I didn't know his granddad from Adam's housecat so I asked him who his granddaddy was and he said, "You probly don't remember him, but you ate in his restaurant your first year at Alabama and you sent him a picture that he's had hung in that place ever since. That picture's his pride and joy and he still tells everybody about the day that Bear Bryant came in and had chitlins with him. My grandpa said that when you left there, he never expected you to remember him or to send him that picture, but you kept your word to him and to Grandpa, that's everything. He said you could teach me more than football and I had to play for a man like you, so I guess I'm going to."

I was floored. But I learned that the lessons my mama taught me were always right. It don't cost nuthin' to be nice. It don't cost 'nuthin' to do the right thing most of the time, and it costs a lot to lose your good name by breakin' your word to someone. When I went back to sign that boy, I looked up his Grandpa and he's still running that place, but it looks a lot better now; and he didn't have chitlins that day, but he had some ribs that 'woulda' made Dreamland proud and I made sure I posed for a lot of pictures; and don't think I didn't leave some new ones for him, too, along with a signed football. I made it clear to all my assistants to keep this story and these lessons in mind when they're out on the road. And if you remember anything else from me, remember this-- it really doesn't cost anything to be nice, and the rewards can be unimaginable.

Coach Bryant was in the presence of these few gentlemen for only minutes, and he defined himself for life, to these gentlemen, as a nice man.

Regardless of our profession, we do define ourselves by how we treat others, and how we behave in the presence of others, and most of the time, we have only minutes or seconds to leave a lasting impression - we can be rude, crude, arrogant, cantankerous, or we can be nice. Nice is always a better choice.

I like what Stephen Grellet, French/American religious leader (1773-1855) said, "I expect to pass through the world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness I can show to any creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer it, for I shall not pass this way again."

Man's Rite of Passage

Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth's rite of passage?

His dad takes him into the forest blindfolded and leaves him alone. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not take off the blindfold until the ray of sun shines through it. He is all by himself. He cannot cry out for help to anyone. Once he survives the night, he is a MAN. He cannot tell the other boys of this experience. Each lad must come into his own manhood.

The boy in our story was, naturally, terrified. He could hear all kinds of noise. Beasts were all around him. Maybe even a human would hurt him. The wind blew the grass and earth and it shook his stump. But he sat stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he could be a man. Finally, after a horrific night the sun appeared and he removed his blindfold. It was then that he saw his father sitting on the stump next to him - at watch the entire night.

"I will never fail you. I will never abandon you."- God (Hebrews 3:5)

Isaiah 41:10
'Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.'

Divine Appointment...

My group has met once so far. Everyone was so excited to be a part of this group. It definitely seems to be a Divine appointment! Bonding amongst group members has happened quickly. We are all excited to get the ball rolling and see how God is going to bring growth to each one of us! I know that I speak for everyone in my group when I say "thank you" to the Lead Team for being faithful and answering God's call in making this ministry available to all of us!

God Bless,
Suzette

Intimacy with Christ

It was wonderful. I love that feeling when Jesus Christ is so incredibly present and talking and in fellowship with us. We easily filled up the time together, and had a wonderful discussion about prayer and accountability. I was able to share, with heartfelt tears, my Life Graph, and to open myself up to my precious sisters in Christ. I believe they are nervous yet excited about getting to share their Life Graphs. I can already feel an incredible bond in our intimate group and I am so excited to be a part of their lives. They are both completely committed to this group, ready to change and ready to grow closer to Christ. I could see Him working through them even in our short amount of time together. And He was alive and moving through me equally as much. What an incredible opportunity! I am so excited!!

With warmth in Him,

Mercedes

Romans 8:28

My first meeting went well. My group seems to fit together well, we have myself a new father, we have a very young father with 3 children, a newly married man, a man who just got engaged the Saturday before our first meeting and a single new believer to soak it all in! We all seem to come from different walks of life but through the blood of Christ the paths don't seem that far apart. We had great conversation and all were open to discuss and share their insights. I could see in the eyes of the newer believer that he was truly witnessing something he had never seen before, and I think he was awed at the raw attempt we were making to build a real vulnerable community with other men. The answers were pretty standard Christian answers and we are no where near the point of asking ourselves to look beyond the answers we speak to the answers we live but I anticipate we will get there. I told my wife that it was good but I hope that we can get past sounding good and spewing out the endless knowledge that so many possess in this information saturated culture to the heart of who we are and the reality of how we live, and she told me with time it will come and I think she is right. So all in all it was a great first night, I saw eagerness to learn, I saw passion to connect, I saw much being held back but I could see that walls were already being broken, and I sensed that God has much in store for us.

Time with the King

My group has now met twice. The first week was great... we played "2 truths and a lie," and exchanged info and got to know each other a bit, and talkedabout prayer and accountability. The second week (on halloween), another woman joined our group, making a grand total now of 5 of us. I shared my"life graph" and am now looking forward to hearing theirs. The girls in my group are all very cool. I feel like so far God has showed me that He will work things out and that I just need to be real and honest and humble in leading this group. I desire to pray more for my girls and spend more time with God in the coming weeks.

Seeking His Instruction & Guidance

We had an inspiring time together discussing our purpose for being together and what each of us was hoping for as outcomes. Each of one is focused on growth and to some extent healing. We also spent time discussing prayer seeking to grow in our ability to be in prayer and fellowship with the Lord throughout the day consistent with Paul's instruction to pray without ceasing.

The amazing thing to me was at the end of our discussions I asked them what they were thinking in an open ended manner. I was a bit floored when the first response seemed off topic - we had been discussing prayer - but ended up being confession of sin. Then I asked the other thinking he might have some admonishment and encouragement but instead offered up the same struggle. Wow. My initial thoughts were to begin to offer my conclusions as to the way they should go. At the same time I sensed the Lord leading me to back off and instead suggest that we offer this up as a prayer to theLord seeking His instruction and guidance in the way they should each go. We had earlier gone over the passages that hinder prayer which included sin so maybe the Spirit had prompted them.

My prayer is that God drives them to repentance and instructs them clearly on how to move forward in their situations.

Blessings,

Michael

Spiritual Deepening

My 2 girls have decided to continue our group for 8 more months, so Iwill not be able to take on another group this year. What a wonderful program this is. I have been so blessed and our groupis going to grow deeper in the Lord and our lives will be richer becauseof the accountability that we share with one another. I will be praying that God will bring you the leaders needed to grow this ministry. I will also be praying that God will expand your and Rob's time as you faithfully lead and organize this program.

Love,
ANN HERBERTS

Joy in His work through you...

"I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:3-6

PART 1 of 3 - The "Giant Killer"

As I read this verse here at 3:34 am in the morning (for whatever reason I just can't seem to sleep), I have this yearning desire to read my King's Word, reflect on it and share some thoughts on it. I haven't really blogged in about a month due to many things yet, there really is no excuse for not doing so. I can feel a desire in me to "step to a new level" but I feel my "fleshly" behaviors, aka, my imperfections keep me from pressing onward in deepening my relationship with my King. Of course this is a topic for another blog entry for which probably belongs in my Quest for Aslan blog so I may or may not pursue this aspect of my entry in there.

Reading this verse, the first thing I think of is how thankful I am for my one true discipler who discipled me AND for the people whom I have discipled. This has led me to an eye-opening realization in our spiritual transformation we all need a "Paul the Apostle" as a spiritual mentor, "Barnabas" as a faithful friend," and a "Timothy" to be our spiritual spark in our lives.

Why a "Paul?"

Firstly, my one true discipler, and my "Paul the Apostle," was the one who started it in all for me in my life. This man and brother in the Kingdom, felt led to "take me under his wing" and "show me the ropes" per se, helped develop my faith in Jesus and my pursuit of the deeper things of God. Although my body and mind did not want to have anything to do with this person, my heart and spirit was drawing me to grab onto this opportunity to be "mentored" or discipled by this "more experienced" believer in my life. I can tell you that I wanted to fight it but the Holy Spirit wanted me to do this and wouldn't allow me to miss this opportunity! You see, this person would become more experienced and mature believer that would be my "Giant "Killer" in my life. What I mean by this is that because of he, through observing his life on a consistent basis and by the pouring of his spiritual lifestyle aspects of his spiritual life, I was shown how to become equipped for Kingdom work and to LOVE JESUS WITH MY ALL MY HEART, SOUL, SPIRIT and MIND! Let me explain more clearly.

Like Our Father in Heaven

By having this "Giant Killer" in my life, I had someone to guide my pursuit of spiritual things, protect my heart and mind in my spiritual transformation and look to as love me almost as compassionately as Jesus would have if He were walking with me in the flesh! In other words, it's a relationship that is such that when you have a eye-opening revelation in any of the three previously mentioned things you can always look for this discipler to LISTEN, GUARD and LOVE me like our Father in heaven!

I remember an experience when I was hurting deeply because I was questioning what God was doing to me in my life at the time. The only person whom I knew could listen, guard and love me was this "Paul the Apostle" in my life, whose name ironically is Peter (a.k.a., "Pietros" in the Greek, which means rock). Although I could have chosen to meet with Peter "one-on-one" to discuss my struggles, I chose to bring this upto him in our weekly discipleship group meeting. I remember seeing the look in my fellow "disciplees'" faces having the expression their faces that can only leave them speechless, or a look that said, "Dude-- that's heavy and I don't know what to say." As a flood of tears rolled down my face and I wanted to run away from God, my "Giant Killer" listened to me by hearing me out, interceded by stepping in front of me by guiding me, and also spiritually loving on me and holding on to me like our Father in heaven to let me know that I would be loved unconditionally through this season of my life!

The "Giant Killer"

My friend, this "Giant Killer," or my discipler, would claim he was ill-equipped to LISTEN, GUARD and LOVE me as God did, I can tell you from hindsight and discipleship group experience that this was EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED IN MY LIFE TO SEE and a WAY FOR ME TO HAVE THE EMBODIMENT OF HAVING A PHYSICAL EXAMPLE of our heavenly Father in my life. Of course, my co-disciplees were able to witness this as well (this is a whole other discussion!). This is one of the most valuable and significant experiences in my pursuit of Jesus and why I am passionate about discipleship!

Instruction, Knowledge & Wisdom

Proverbs 23:6 - "Apply your heart to insruction and your ears to words of knowledge."

Proverbs 23:15 - "My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad; my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right."

The secular world today depends on the knowledge of it greatest thinkers, scientists, writers, politicians, musicians, artists and so forth-- no matter how eschew their thinking may be. For their ideas and statements they are seen as the leaders in "progressive thought" or "cultural pioneers." However, according to a Bible author, "...there is nothing new under the sun." All things that are of truth come from God. He is the Creator of it all. His wisdom is all over Scripture and can apply to all parts of our lives. Are we going to trust the man who was created or the Creator of man when it comes to wisdom and knowledge? We are intelligently designed by God and the purpose or our creation is to generate "good" in our lives that we may please God.

Echoes in Eternity

"...what is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then it vanishes." James 4:14b

The substance of life is filled by the actions and our motives. Things that inspire us that draw us into action. At times our lives come across moments that deteriorate our life substance, while at other times enhance our life substance. James makes the statement that our life on this plane is just a mere breath in eternity. As man pursues his significance in his culture/society he must realize that the memory of his legacy will fade.

In the movie "Gladiator," the slavemaster, Proximo, tells the hero, Maximus, "Life is but shadows and dust-- shadows and dust." But more importantly, the statement that bears the ultimate truth is when Maximus is about to go into battle and says to his men, "What we do in this lifetime will echo in eternity!"

You see, what we do in our earthly lives is what determine our destiny in eternity. We need to develop true substance within our lives. This true substance is determined by the "good" that we do along with the proper motive to do these "good" things. God created us in His image. With that being so we read in the Genesis account that everything God created was "good," therefore we too are "good." God generates good. With us being the image of God the reflection of His glory, we too are called to generate good. There are a multitude of ways for us to generate good, but it can be summarized by doing the following: 1) Love the Lord your God, with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and 2) Love your neighbor as you love yourself.

With these as our compass we will be on the path to forming true substance in our lives!

Overcoming Challenges

No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.

"Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:5-9

Strength and courage. They are the characteristics that define the man of God. As Joshua was called to lead the Israelites in the passing of Moses a responsibility that was far larger than him beckoned. How was he to lead the people? How was he to provide for them? How was he to protect them? The LORD faithfully responds to Joshua, "Be strong and courageous." This kind of strength and courage however does not come from the self-generated means of physical training or intellect. It comes from faith and obedience in the Word of God. The result of this faith and obedience will be prosperity and success in God's eyes and "...the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
